Why Do I Look Bad in Photos? (It's Mostly the Camera)

Lens distortion, the mirror flip and a 12mm front camera explain nearly all of it. Here's what's actually happening, and which parts you can fix.

If you like your face in the mirror and dislike it in every photo, that gap has causes you can name. Almost none of them are your face. This is the mechanism; for the fixes as a checklist, see how to look good in photos.

The mirror flip

You have spent your whole life looking at a reversed version of yourself. Faces are asymmetric — one eye sits a little higher, the nose leans slightly, one side of the smile lifts more. A photograph shows the unflipped version, which to you looks subtly, unplaceably wrong. Everyone who knows you sees that version daily and finds it completely normal.

This is also why people often prefer their mirror selfies: they're seeing the face they're used to. Nothing to fix here, but worth knowing that your reaction to your own photo is not a reliable judgment of the photo.

Front cameras distort faces

This is the big one, and it is fixable. A phone's front camera is a wide-angle lens — roughly 23mm equivalent on most phones, sometimes wider — held at arm's length. Wide lenses at close range enlarge whatever is nearest the glass and shrink whatever is furthest.

  • Your nose gets bigger. It's the closest part of your face to the lens. Studies of selfie distortion put the exaggeration at around 30% at typical arm's length.
  • Your ears and jaw shrink back. The sides of your head are further from the lens, so they render smaller, which narrows your face and widens the middle of it.
  • Your forehead grows if you hold the phone slightly high, which most people do.

Portrait photographers use 85mm lenses for exactly this reason: at that focal length and distance, the front and sides of your face are close enough to the same distance from the lens that nothing gets exaggerated.

The single highest-value change

Use the rear camera on a 10-second timer, propped against something, and stand three or four steps back. Same phone, same face, no distortion. It is the difference between a selfie and a photograph.

Light, and the timing problem

Two more things stack on top of the optics.

  • Overhead light. Ceiling lights and midday sun come from above, dropping shadows into your eye sockets and under your nose and chin. It reads as tired and gaunt. Front light from a window does the opposite. The lighting guide covers this properly.
  • A photo is 1/500th of a second. In conversation your face moves constantly and people see the average. A still frame catches one arbitrary instant — mid-blink, mid-word, mid-nothing. That's why one photo can look wrong and the next twenty look fine.

The practical answer to the second problem is volume. Take thirty frames, not three. Photographers shoot hundreds for one usable headshot, and they're working with people who do this professionally.

What to actually do
