Hiking Dating Photos: Keep the Person in the Landscape

A hiking photo should show you clearly enough that the landscape supports the introduction. A tiny figure on a ridge may be a favourite travel photograph, but it gives somebody little information about your face. Choose a real outing and a stable place to pause. You do not need a difficult route or a summit to show that you enjoy being outside.

Choose an ordinary stopping point

Take the picture at a safe, permitted stopping place where neither you nor your helper needs to step backwards towards an edge or block the trail. The photograph should never determine how far you go or where you stand. A broad path, rest area or quiet viewpoint can provide enough context. If conditions are poor, enjoy the walk and take the profile picture somewhere else.

• Make the scale useful. Include enough trail or scenery to explain the setting while keeping your face a meaningful part of the frame.
• Choose a pause over a performance. You can stop and look towards the camera. There is no need to pretend somebody caught you unaware during a strenuous section.
• Keep the outing truthful. An occasional easy walk and a regular hiking hobby are both valid. Let the caption reflect which one the picture represents.

Take a portrait and a landscape version

1. 1Start closer. Ask for a frame that shows your face and upper body with some background. Check that a hat, sunglasses or deep shadow does not obscure the features you want visible.
2. 2Take the wider memory. Capture the scenery you want to remember as a separate photograph. You do not have to make one frame serve both a profile introduction and a landscape album.
3. 3Keep normal equipment. Use what belongs to the actual outing. Borrowing specialist gear solely to imply experience creates a story you may not want to maintain.
4. 4Check before continuing. If the portrait is unclear, take another simple frame rather than assuming the scenic image can be enlarged into a detailed face later.

Use the caption to set realistic expectations

A useful caption might say what you enjoyed: the conversation, the view or the stop for food afterwards. It can also signal your preferred pace. ‘Short routes with a bakery afterwards’ introduces a different kind of plan from ‘training for a long-distance trail’. Choose the description that fits you. The image does not need to prove fitness, toughness or an unusually adventurous identity.

If the hike was part of a past holiday, check that you still look recognisably like the person in the photo. You can keep a meaningful older activity picture when it remains accurate, but lead with a current portrait.
