"Resetting the algorithm" usually means one of two different problems, and they need opposite responses. Work out which one you have before deleting anything, because a delete is irreversible and often fixes nothing.
- Your reach has been cut. Likes go out and nothing comes back, for weeks. That is throttling, and a reset can genuinely help — start with Hinge shadowban: how to tell and fix it.
- Your reach is fine and your profile is not converting. People see you and scroll past. A reset changes nothing here; it just gives the same profile a fresh audience to reject it.
The honest test
If you are still getting a trickle of likes and your matches simply do not reply, the algorithm is not your problem — the profile is. Resetting is the most popular way to avoid that conclusion.
Try these first, in order
- 1Rebuild the photo set rather than shuffling it. Replace your two weakest photos outright. If the lead photo has been the same for months, that is the one to change — how to choose your best dating photos.
- 2Change every prompt. New prompts read as a new profile to anyone who scrolled past you before, and they cost nothing.
- 3Pause, then return. Hinge lets you hide your profile without deleting it. A week off is the cheapest thing that resembles a reset.
- 4Widen your filters. Distance and age filters tightened over time are a very common self-inflicted cause of an empty queue.
- 5Slow down and comment. Selectivity is the signal Hinge reads — see how the Hinge algorithm actually works.
Give any change a couple of weeks before judging it. Changing five things at once and reading the result after two days tells you nothing about which one mattered.
What deleting actually does
Deleting and recreating is the closest thing to a true reset, and it is genuinely destructive. Before you do it, know the cost:
- Every match and conversation goes. Permanently, including ones you meant to come back to.
- Any paid subscription does not transfer. Cancel it first, from the app store rather than from Hinge, or you will keep paying for an account that no longer exists.
- Reusing the same phone number and photos may carry the old signals over. Reports linked to your identity are not reliably escaped by a new profile.
- You lose the account age. If your profile was performing fine a year ago, you are discarding whatever history came with it.
If you do go ahead: cancel the subscription, delete from Settings → Account → Delete Account, wait a few days rather than rebuilding immediately, and come back with genuinely different photos and prompts. Rebuilding the same profile the same evening is the version of this that reliably does not work.
Do not bother with these
- Liking everyone to "retrain" it. This removes the preference signal Most Compatible runs on. It is the single worst thing on this list.
- Reinstalling the app. It changes nothing server-side.
- Buying a Boost to escape throttling. Paid reach and organic reach are separate; a Boost spends money to rent visibility without addressing why it dropped.
- Logging out for an afternoon. Not long enough to register as anything.
